Managing Categories
Category Management organises your keywords into logical groups based on topics, products, services, or any classification that makes sense for your business. Well-structured categories make it easier to track, analyse, and optimise your SEO performance.
Why categories matter
Effective category organisation gives you:
- Better keyword organisation for easier management
- Clearer reporting by analysing performance by category
- Focused content planning based on category performance
- Easy identification of gaps in your keyword strategy
Two ways to manage categories
You'll use two tools that work together:
- Keywords tab - Assign categories as you work with keywords
- Category Tags tab - Create and manage your category structure
Use whichever fits your workflow at any moment.
Managing categories in the Keywords tab
Add your keywords first
- Navigate to Manage Keywords → Keywords tab
- Click "Add New Keywords"
- Select your domain
- Enter keywords (one per line or comma-separated)
- Click "Add Keywords"
Your keywords appear in the table without categories. You'll assign them next.
Assign categories to keywords
Once keywords appear in the table:
- Find the keyword
- Click "Add" in the Categories column
- Select existing categories or create new ones
- Click "Save Changes"
Create categories on the fly:
- Type a new category name in the dropdown
- Click "Create category: [your text]" or press Enter
- The category is created and assigned instantly
- It's now available for other keywords in this domain
Assign multiple categories: Select as many categories as you need for each keyword. They'll display as grey tags.
Edit or remove categories
Edit categories:
- Click "Add" next to the keyword
- Add or remove categories in the dropdown
- Click "Save Changes"
Remove a single category: Click the "×" on the category tag. No confirmation needed.
Remove all categories:
- Click "Add" next to the keyword
- Clear all selections
- Click "Save Changes"
Filter and search
Filter by domain: View keywords from a specific website. Category counts update automatically.
Filter by category: View only keywords with a specific category assigned.
Search: Filter in real-time across keywords, categories, domains, search volume, and difficulty.
View stats: The header shows total keywords and categorised keywords for your selected domain.
Managing categories in the Category Tags tab
The Categories tab gives you a dedicated space to build and maintain your category structure.
Create categories in bulk
- Navigate to Manage Keywords → Category Tags tab
- Select your domain
- Enter category names (comma-separated or one per line)
- Click "Add Categories"
Categories appear in the table below and become available in the Keywords tab.
Delete categories
- Find the category in the table
- Click the trash icon
- Confirm deletion
Important: Deleting a category removes it from all keywords currently using it. The keywords remain but lose this category assignment.
Build an effective category structure
Naming your categories
Be specific:
- Good: "Organic Coffee Beans", "Winter Running Gear"
- Poor: "Products", "Stuff"
Stay consistent: Pick title case or lowercase and stick with it across all categories.
Think hierarchically: Use naming patterns to group related categories:
- "Shoes - Running"
- "Shoes - Casual"
- "Shoes - Formal"
Keep it concise: Aim for 1-4 words per category.
Structure for your needs
Create categories based on how you'll analyse data:
E-commerce:
- Product line: Shoes, Clothing, Electronics
- Customer segment: Men, Women, Children
- Purchase intent: Research, Comparison, Purchase
Service business:
- Service line: Consulting, Implementation, Support
- Industry: Healthcare, Finance, Retail
- Location: New York, Chicago, Remote
Content publisher:
- Topic: Technology, Health, Finance
- Content type: How-to Guides, Reviews, News
- User intent: Informational, Transactional
Keep it manageable
Aim for 10-30 categories per domain. Too few means poor organisation. Too many creates complexity and overlap.
Common questions
Can I assign multiple categories to one keyword? Yes. Use multiple categories for cross-referencing (e.g. "Running Shoes" + "Nike" + "Sale Items").
Can categories have the same name across domains? Yes. Each domain has its own category list.
When should I use each tab? Category Tags tab for planning and bulk creation. Keywords tab for daily management and quick assignments.
What happens when I delete a category? It's removed from all keywords using it. The keywords remain but lose that category assignment.
Why don't I see my category in the dropdown? Check you're working with the correct domain. Categories are domain-specific.
Can I rename a category? Create a new category with the desired name, reassign keywords, then delete the old category.
