Link Management

Link management is the process of adding, organizing, and monitoring the connections between your content pieces, helping visitors travel smoothly from one place to another.

There are four main types of links you'll work with:

  • Internal Inbound: Links from your other content that point to this page
  • Internal Outbound: Links from this page that point to your other content
  • External Inbound: Links from other websites that point to your page
  • External Outbound: Links from your page that point to other websites

Proper link management helps visitors navigate your content more easily, improves your search engine rankings, and creates a more valuable experience for your audience.

The link management system is designed to help you track and manage all types of links in your content. It integrates with your content structure including projects, clusters, topics, and subtopics.

Best Practices for Link Management

Internal Linking Strategy

  • Create Hub Pages: Link from main topics to related subtopics
  • Connect Related Content: Link between pages that cover related subjects
  • Use Descriptive Anchor Text: Make links clear and relevant to the destination
  • Maintain Balance: Don't overload pages with too many links
  • Update Regularly: Review and refresh links periodically

External Linking Tips

  • Link to Trustworthy Sources: Only link to reputable websites
  • Ensure Relevance: External links should complement your content
  • Check Links Regularly: Make sure external links still work and lead to good content
  • Use "NoFollow" When Appropriate: For certain links that you don't want to endorse fully

Understanding Link Attributes

Link Types Explained

  • Internal Inbound: Links coming to your page from elsewhere on your site
  • Internal Outbound: Links going from your page to elsewhere on your site
  • External Inbound: Links coming to your page from other websites
  • External Outbound: Links going from your page to other websites

Follow Types Explained

  • Follow: Normal links that pass SEO value (default setting)
  • NoFollow: Tells search engines not to count the link for ranking purposes
  • Sponsored: Used for paid links or advertisements
  • UGC: Used for user-generated content links (like comments)

Broken Links Management

The system automatically checks your links weekly to identify any that are broken (pointing to pages that no longer exist). You'll see a "Broken" badge next to any problematic links.

To fix broken links:

  1. Look for links with the "Broken" badge
  2. Click the three-dot menu (⋮) and select "Edit"
  3. Either update the URL to a working destination or remove the link entirely

Common Questions

"How often should I check my links?"

It's good practice to review your links quarterly, though the system automatically checks for broken links weekly.

"How many internal links should I have on a page?"

There's no fixed number, but aim for quality over quantity. Generally, 5-10 relevant internal links per 1,000 words of content is a good target.

"Should I link to my competitors?"

It depends on your strategy. Linking to competitors can show thoroughness, but you may prefer to link to neutral sources when covering topics that overlap with competitor content.

"What makes a good anchor text?"

Good anchor text:

  • Is descriptive and relevant to the destination
  • Contains keywords when natural and appropriate
  • Gives readers a clear idea of what they'll find when they click
  • Is not too long (2-5 words is often ideal)
  • Avoids generic phrases like "click here" or "read more"
